As some of you may know, I have been sponsoring "sisters" in the Democratic Republic of Congo through an amazing organization called Women for Women International. I was fortunate to be able to continue communicating with my sister Graciane through email after she graduated from the program in December of 2007.

Graciane learned sewing skills during her year with Women for Women but could not afford a sewing machine. Being a dance teacher, I decided to design a special dance t-shirt honoring the women of the Congo, like Graciane, who are struggling to survive in a country in crisis. The horrors of war are very real for these families, and most have lost a parent, child, or close relative to fighting or disease.

Thanks to the support of over a hundred individuals who purchased the 2008 Live to Dance shirts, I was able to fund a mechanical machine for Graciane, pay rent for one year for a shop in the main street of her town, and to pay for the shipment of a used laptop for Graciane's brother Paul, a young doctor studying OBGYN.

I truly believe that my connection with Graciane and Paul has been blessed from the start. As it seems, both have a strong voice in their community and are passionate about rebuilding their country.

This design was inspired by wall paintings in the area of the DRC where Graciane and Paul live. I was so impressed with Paul's passion and spirit, that I designed this bag to help raise funds for his medical school fees. The image reminds me of the ripples of water that emanate from a small pebble thrown into a pond.  I believe that the quote speaks of Paul: "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others...he sends forth a tiny ripple of HOPE - Robert Francis Kennedy" These book bags have sold out, but I will be printing them again soon!

Feb.14, 2011 - At this time I have some very sad news to share. My adopted brother Paul, was killed in Africa on Dec.30th by a stray bullet, during a store robbery. Unfortunately, I am questioning the motives of the person who contacted me with this information. I am waiting yet to get news directly from the family. I do believe that Paul is gone - I havn't heard from him in since mid December. Please place his family in your prayers that they may find a secure way to get in touch with me and to maintain contact. Paul was an inspiration to me, and I am the better for knowing him.
